Minimum Training Obligation

The minimum annual training obligation is made up of:

Annual Continuous Training (ACT): This comprises a maximum of 15 consecutive days, but may be made up of 2 or 3 periods of ACT, one of which must not be for less than 8 consecutive days each Training Year.

Additional Training (AT): This is not less than 12 days in addition to ACT each Training Year. This training is normally carried out at weekends.

Period of engagement: The initial period of service is five years. Extensions of service are permitted for periods of not more than 5 years at a time up to the age of 60, providing an individual can still meet their training requirements, are medically fit and fill a vacancy on the unit establishment.

Mobilisation  The Reserve Forces Act 1996 (RFA 96), sets out three main powers under which mobilisation can take place. Compulsory mobilisation may occur if it appears that national danger is imminent, a great emergency has arisen, or in the event of an attack on the United Kingdom. It may arise if it appears that warlike operations are in preparation or progress - for example, in the case of Bosnia in 1995-96. Compulsory mobilisation may also happen if it appears necessary or desirable to use Armed Forces on operations outside the UK to protect life or property or to alleviate distress.
